World Lake Day 2026

The United Nations is celebrating the second annual World Lake Day, today, August 27, 2026.  We are reminded that lakes around the world are the lifeblood of our planet.  Lakes serve are a source for fresh drinking water, support agriculture, industry, and play a key role in maintaining biodiversity.  We are also reminded that lakes allow for climate regulation, provide opportunities for recreational use and support local communities.  

Within our area we are fortunate to live amongst the Great Lakes Region, with Lake Erie providing us with a fresh drinking water source.  A few facts about Lake Erie: it is the smallest, shallowest and warmest among the Great Lakes.  The water volume within Lake Erie is turned over every 2.6 years, which is the shortest turnover time amongst the Great Lakes and as many locals know it is known as the Walleye capital of the world.

While Lake Erie has recovered from much of the pollution of decades past, there is still work to do.  The UN observations demonstrate lakes are still being affected by a combination of overuse, pollution and climate change. We must continue to work collaboratively with all government agencies and the public to be stewards of fresh waters.
