Lake Erie Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) Forecast

The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Service NCCOS provides a forecast of the Microcystis harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Lake Erie several times a week during the warmer months of the year. HAB forecasts are based on understanding the causes of HABs and how they respond to changing weather and ocean conditions. The other critical component of a HAB forecast is the ability to routinely and remotely detect HABs, their toxins, and environmental conditions that foster blooms and enhance their toxicity. The 2026 early seasonal postings have now commenced again.  UWSS Inc. will be posting regular results, provided by NCCOS.

Harmful Algal Bloom Bulletins – 2026 Season

The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) is currently forecasting a moderate harmful algal bloom (HAB) season. As environmental conditions continue to change, this forecast may be revised accordingly. The current outlook is based in part on the relatively wet spring experienced in the region to date, along with measurements of Maumee River discharge used to support these projections. UWSS Inc. remains committed to monitoring algal conditions closely and ensuring that the most current information is available. This page will be updated as new information and forecasts are released.

Current projections indicate bloom conditions may be similar to those observed in 2022 and 2024. We will continue to post NCCOS prediction bulletins and summer forecasts as they become available.
